How to start out as an artist...
1. Pick a medium. Any medium at all. The more comfortable you are with it, the better. Don't let anyone tell you what you can or cannot use. Feel free to play around with media, and to use many different forms, if that is your wont.
2. Experiment with it. Everyone's first work is experimental. Some choose to stay in this style, some choose to take a path based on what their influences are producing. Experimentation is the only way that you can discover what it is that you like and do not like, and what it is that you want to produce as you go forward.
3. Finish every piece you start. Even if it seems to be going nowhere, even if it takes years. "It does not matter how slowly you go, so long as you do not stop." (Ancient Chinese Proverb)
4. Put out everything you create, as long as you think it is a final piece. People's opinion of your work is not valid. Only take notice of those opinions you think useful or important.
5. Continue to produce work. Even when it seems futile, the only way to be an artist, is to be an artist. Artists create Art. If you are not creating, you are not being.
6. Make no attempt to censor or edit yourself. This is not your job. Your task is to take in the world, filter it into something you can recreate in your chosen medium, and then produce it. Those who find it offensive, distressing, annoying, upsetting, or feel that it should not exist for whatever reason are not your audience. Anyone who would try to remove your ability to create are enemies. Love them, learn from them, try to educate them, but do not let them dictate what you can or cannot produce.
7. Remember that you are your audience. If you hate what you have created, by all means delete it from existence. But don't let anyone else make that decision for you if you are happy with your work. I was going to try and apply an unusual gimmick to today's bout of writing. But upon trying to bring said artifact to fruition, i was struck with a thought that it is far too arduous to follow through to it's final conclusion. That task of course is to totally omit a particular symbol from our library of graphical notation...
That particular symbol of course is "E".
Seriously, it is much harder than you would think it. Closing off an entire vowel, removes whole swathes of words from your vocabulary. It gets to a point where it almost hurts to think, but it's actually quite fun. I highly recommend it as a way to affect your consciousness of words themselves, and how you use them.
I was send the link to a site to this site which contains the basic idea of a Lipogram, or a piece of text that does not contain the letter E.
The link was accompanied by a short burst of cutup, which i'll add seperately.
It got me thinking. I love words as things in themselves, but even more so i love the idea of changing my own perception of them. If i can break my brain while i'm at it, then so much the better. There is nothing more likely to make your work stagnant, than to do what you have always done without and adjustment. Even more so if you don't even realise that you have fallen into a pattern.
So for that little lesson, and the cut up itself, thank you Dodecahedron5D. Whatever your real name may or may not be. I shall just call you Deca. It sounds kind of cool.
